“The AGE of ADALINE” (2015) Movie Review.

This romantic fantasy film is specially designed to set female hearts aflutter. Do bring along your hankie just in case, as the narrative rolls on, you will feel a tug at your heartstrings. You might cry.

It’s “all kinds of beautiful” in terms of lavish production values with an award winning performance from Blake Lively who brings applause to the lead character Adaline.

Adaline, through a supernatural consternation, has remained 29 for nearly a century. It’s great to be forever young. Right?

In order to protect her identity, she bolts and lives a solitary existence until unexpectedly, the love she hungers for comes knocking and things start to go awry.

The movie is about a woman who develops the uncanny ability to remain   forever young.

The film focuses on her, almost as a metaphorical character study, on how the major events and emotions of her life are affected by her condition.

Her daughter grows older than her. She avoids love for fear of death and loss. And, she’s always on the move.

There is a lingering fear in her that one day, the man in her dream shows up, and things will start to change.

“The Age of Adaline” is fashionably directed by Lee Toland Krieger who has probably splurged a fortune to create the vintage fashionista look for the Adaline character. The end result is: she looks absolutely stunning.

The film stars Blake LivelyMichiel Huisman,Kathy BakerAmanda Crew,Harrison Ford, andEllen Burstyn.

Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) is seen purchasing fake IDs at an apartment in San Francisco. She goes home to her apartment where her dog greets her. During her 107 years of being alive, she has raised the same kind of dog over and over again. She notes that she is late for work at the downtown library’s office of archives.

While working, she opens a film reel and her life is explained. She was born on New Year’s Day in 1908, got married, had a child, and became a widow. One night, an unexplainable snow began to fall as she was driving to her parents’ house. She suffers a car accident/lightning strike combination that causes her to remain 29 years old forever. As her daughter Flemming grows older, it becomes apparent that Adaline is not aging. One day she is pulled over by a cop, who takes away her ID as it says she is in her late 40s.

One night, she is walking home when two FBI agents put her in a car and try to take her on an airplane. She escapes and decides she will spend her life running. She explains this to Flemming, and they have a heartfelt goodbye. At present day, she adds a cosigner to her bank account and has a flashback to when she opened the account. She had invested in Xerox, and it has paid off well. She is planning to leave soon to live in Oregon.

On New Year’s Eve, she enters the hotel to a party where she meets Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman). Sparks fly …..

You have to catch the movie for the nail-biting suspenseful finale.

“GHOST COINS” THAI MOVIE REVIEW (2015) เกมส์ปลุกผี (鬼铜). MORE SPOOKS THAN SLAUGHTERS..

COINS 5

COME ON OUT! I am NOT AFRAID of YOU!

“GHOST COINS” THAI MOVIE REVIEW (2015) เกมส์ปลุกผี (鬼铜)

BE WARNED that this is a NASTY MOVIE, with its SENSELESS SPREAD of BUTCHERY AND GORE.

If blood is a subject matter that will keep you on edge, then don’t ever miss out on this film.

Basically the plot deals with karmic forces with demonic revenge returning a thousandfold, after teenage pranksters trap their bosom buddy in a graveyard, not after stealing a gold coin from the mouth of a corpse.

This group of teenagers are consumed by greed and pay no heed to deathly warnings.

A Thai belief instructs relatives to put coins in the mouths of the dead for the afterlife process.

But these stubborn teenagers even rob corpses’s money which are stuck in their lifeless mouths. The corpses are decaying and swarmed by maggots. Disgusting.

You bet revenge arrives swift and sweet, clamoring after the irresponsible culprits who are unaware they are toying with fire.

PLOT

Ton and Jack are two students who have a terrible devil-may-care reputation for producing  “just for fun” mindless video clips in which they challenge superstitious beliefs.

As their viral clips gain more views, they get bolder and increase the intensity of their pranks.

They deviously scheme to kidnap the unsuspecting Tor, Ton’s younger brother for jest, and bring him into a cemetery to avenge a wrong he’s done to Bee, a woman whom Jack is also in love with.

Ton and Jack carry out their plan.

They take Tor into the cemetery and handcuffed him to a corpse.

When the two practical jokers find a dried-up skeleton, they notice a shiny gold coin in its mouth.

Ton gets greedy and steals the gold coin – suddenly, the corpse stirs.

Ton is frightened and as he starts running, he sprains his ankle and collapses to the ground.

Tor is shocked and about to run away too, but at that moment Ton handcuffs his brother’s hand with his own.

Together, they flee for dear life as the vengeful ghost chase closes upon them.

It is sheer pandemonium for here.

Ton and Tor are forced to escape in the dark, as Jack and everyone run in different directions.

But what all of them will witness later is a real nightmare they’ll never forget – but only if they can leave the cemetery alive.

There is a belief in Thailand which requires relatives to put coins inside the mouth of the deceased so that they can move on to the afterlife in wealth and  pomp. However, there is a group of reckless teenagers who keep stealing the gold coins from the deceased.

Later, the group of teenagers then encounter various horrifying situations as the spirits of the man returns to haunt them.

TODAY IS MOTHER'S DAY. MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS.

MOTHER AND SON REUNION
MOTHER DAY 2
MOTHER DAY

THIS MORNING I WOKE UP REFLECTING ABOUT MY MOTHER.

Oh heck, my mom died many years ago, after battling a long illness.
I loved my mom then, but I had taken her for granted.
I was a bad son but right until now, I still love her very much.

There’s nothing a mother would not do for her son.
Despite our myriad of arguments and irregardless of the rains and the storms, the happiness and the sorrows, I knew in the end, she would always be there rooting for me.

My mother never failed me, but I did.
I was ungrateful and uncaring, being the gawkish ingrate, I never knew how to express my feelings for her.
Today, I wish I could turn the clock backwards, if only ….

For those whose mothers are still around, please do this for me.

Go give her a hug, hold her tight and tell her that you love her very much.

There’s no greater love in this world than that of a mother for her child.

Let her know, lest one day when she’s no longer around, it’ll be far too late.

My mother had taught me how to forgive and when to let go.

If only I had known then.

Viva la, MOTHER!

MY MUMMY DEAREST.

LYDIA SUM AND DAUGHTER

THIS IS A VINTAGE 2008 ARTICLE. It had been written to  commemorate the late LYDIA SUM and her living daughter JOYCE CHENG.

The years have rolled by, but the tearful memories remain.

Here’s a BELATED tribute to a comedian we had loved so dearly.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY 2015!

With the passing of LYDIA SUM, her teenage daughter JOYCE CHENG now begins her courageous return to total independence.

Never easy, adjusting to the pain of heartbreak on losing a mother-cum-confidante so dear.

Not a smooth journey of healing either, but life has to go on.

It’s a known fact that LYDIA had always showered her affection for her daughter when she was alive,

and past televised clips of the famous mother-and-daughter display of adoration in public genuinely warm our hearts.

There is no greater love on earth than the love of a mother.

Isn’t it?

In her tearful eulogy to her mother, JOYCE CHENG enunciated that “Have you seen a shooting star? No? Well, they are very rare. When they appear, they are so brilliant, so bright. You are my shooting star, Mum.”

George Eliot, British novelist once wrote that ‘life began with waking up loving my mother’s face’.

I remembered vividly now that I used to defy my hapless mother during my primary school days.

I was disobedient, rebellious and headstrong and brought tons of problems to my family.

How I loathed my mother and thought of her hating me too.

But one decade later, when the business that I had set up went on a tailspin due to management chaos, and many of my so-called wonderful friends forsook me, it was my mother who stood by me.

By then, I was just too shameful and perplexed to think properly.

Didn’t someone once said that ‘a mother is a bank where we deposit all our hurts and worries’?

How true, I finally realized.

A mother’s love is like an island in life’s ocean

A peaceful, quiet shelter

From the wind, the rain, the tide,

‘Tis bound on the North by Hope.

By Patience on the West

By tender Counsel on the South

And East by Rest.

Above it like a beacon light,

Shine FAITH and TRUTH and PRAYER

And through the changing scenes of life

I find a HAVEN there.

Let us not take our mothers for granted.

Lest it is too late for regrets.
